The 1989-90 Michigan State Spartans entered the season unranked and unthought of in regards to the Big Ten Championship race. Led by all-everything shooting guard Steve Smith, the Spartans teetered inside the top 25 for most of the winter.
It wasn't until Jud Heathcote's team won their last 10 regular season games including wins against #15 Illinois, #25 Indiana, #8 Michigan, #17 Minnesota and #10 Purdue, that people started seeing MSU as a Final Four contender. That 10 game win streak secured the Big Ten Championship and put the Spartans inside the top 3 of the AP Poll.
